Every once in a while, I think I have a great idea. I feel that this thought, inspiration or “ah-ha” moment could ‘change the world.’ But in that thoughtful moment, my fears and doubts creep in with questions – the how’s, what’s, where’s, when’s, and whys. The magical possibility turns into an unattainable pipe dream. So I place it in a hypothetical box for another day.
In 1979 a study was conducted at the Harvard Business School where students were asked, “have you set clear, written goals for your future and made plans to accomplish them?” 84 percent had no specific goals, 13 percent had goals, but they were not in writing, and only three percent had written their goals and plans out. Ten years later the members of that class were interviewed again. The findings showed that the 13 percent of the class who had goals were earning, on average, twice as much as the 84 percent who had no goals at all. What is even more astonishing is the 3 percent who had clear written goals were earning 10 times as much as the other 97 percent altogether.
By setting our goals and creating an action plan, we turn our “ah-ha” thoughts into reality. Keeping track of progress provides guided direction and encourages productivity. To help aid in this process the Behance team in New York has developed tools such as action pads and dot grids to help “make your ideas happen”.
The change makers of the world don’t doubt and delay their dreams. They take their idea and embrace the questions. They make the time to reflect on the opportunity and turn their dreams into a goal-oriented reality. By writing out our own objectives and potential hurdles we are moved to action, fulfilling our own dreams, and becoming the change maker of tomorrow.
Believe in it? Write it down.
